So what is the difference? What sets architect-designed homes apart from other houses? Put simply, the former offer more than just a range of options; they are conceived from top to bottom for specific people and for a specific place. Architects have a keen eye for aesthetics, of course, but they also know how best to capture natural light and views to the outside. They understand function and flow. When it comes to sustainable design, craftsmanship, and material choices, they help homeowners make value decisions on where to save money and where to spend it. And they know how to make it all home.

The Architect’s Touch: The stories behind five architect-designed home projects
Summer is home-tour season. There are luxury tours and garden tours, city tours and small neighborhood tours. These have been going on for years. Architects, meanwhile, have stood mostly on the sidelines despite oftentimes having designed the best work. This year, however, they get to take center stage.
Architectural Points of Interest on the Tour:

David Salmela, FAIA, Salmela Architect’s design for the Streeter Home in Deephaven has won an AIA Minnesota Honor Award and several national awards.

Trading New York for Midwest Grit
In the fall of 2007, Will Hopkins and Mary K. Baumann made what many New Yorkers would consider a puzzling real estate decision. Maybe a crazy one. Having sold their Chelsea office, the veteran graphic designers traded a 2,000-square-foot apartment in one of the grandest buildings on the Upper West Side, with 13-foot ceilings and a 100-foot-long courtyard view, for a pair of unfinished basement condominiums. Oh yes, and the stabilized rent on the apartment was $2,000 a month. And the condominiums are in Minneapolis.
